A tragic railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive critical opposition regarding the speed and execution of the country's flagship government projects.
The crash happened on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a line constructed to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was intended to offer an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring regional growth in the area.
“We are going to thoroughly investigate the reasons behind this tragedy,” affirmed the head of state.
The president confirmed that, of the around 250 people on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in critical condition. The official noted plans to go to Oaxaca to speak with those affected.
Flagship Project of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a signature development scheme of the immediate past president, whose presidency concluded the previous year. This venture was intimately linked to his government's economic vision for the southern region.
Another massive railway undertaking from that period, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the wider plan to revitalize the economy of a relatively disadvantaged part of the country.
Building Management and Safety Concerns
The building of both train projects was supervised by the nation's military, marking a significant expansion of its role in national works. They were built at an fast-tracked speed, defying expectations to be at least partly launched before the end of that administration.
However, this accelerated timeline had concurrently fueled persistent questions over operational security.
- Sunday's derailment was the third event on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This encompasses an earlier collision this month when a train struck a truck at a crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had several non-fatal derailments.
Appeals for Investigation and Halt
In the wake of the tragedy, the chief of a key rival party urged an prompt suspension in the construction and operation of all similar projects.
This halt was requested pending a full technical review. The party declared that the loss of life "calls for immediate answers."
In reply, the head of state asserted that the train had been operating in complete compliance with all security protocols. Assurances were given that the government would continue to be "accountable" in both the construction and running of these vital projects.
