Fed Lowers Interest Rates for Second Time This Year Amid Financial Instability

The US central bank lowered interest rates on Wednesday, representing the second reduction in the current year during economic turbulence stemming from the government closure and tariff policies.

Decision Arrives at Extraordinary Time for Federal Reserve

The move to reduce the key rate by a quarter point to a range of 3.75% to 4% comes at an unprecedented moment for the Fed. The authority has been under immense pressure to cut rates even with persistent inflation.

Fed Statement Highlights Job Market Changes

In a announcement, the Fed stated that the unemployment rate had gone up but remains low. “Job gains have decelerated,” the statement reads. “Price increases has risen and remains moderately high.”

Government Shutdown Complicates Fed’s Job

The continuing federal government shutdown, now one of the longest in American history, has also complicated the central bank’s task. Gathering of key economic data has been indefinitely halted as employees at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are furloughed during the shutdown.

Information Shortage Impacts Policy Decisions

The Fed typically analyzes BLS data to determine labor market conditions, such as the count of new jobs added to the economy and the present jobless percentage. The last jobs report was published in early September, before the shutdown, and provided a somewhat gloomy snapshot of the jobs market in August.

The figure of jobs added to the market in the summer month was down by more than 100,000 since the spring, and unemployment rose to four point three percent – the highest since three years ago.

Private Data Show Ongoing Slowdown

Though BLS was set to publish last month’s job market report in early October, it halted its publication when the shutdown began. Private payroll firm a leading payroll processor reported earlier this month that the business segment cut 32,000 positions in last month, a sign that the job market is still decelerating.

“Supply as well as demand for labor has declined quite sharply,” Fed chair the Fed chairman stated recently, which he had earlier attributed stems from immigration and tariff policies.

Price Data Shows Moderate Increase

Though the bureau’s jobs report has been suspended, the agency still issued its price statistics for September that indicated that costs are rising, although slowly. Prices increased 3% over the past twelve months, the peak since January. In April, the yearly price increase was 2.3%, the minimum it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal price increase is two percent.
