Pentagon Investigation Concludes Defense Secretary Put Troops in Jeopardy with Signal Chat.

A highly anticipated Pentagon review has determined that Pentagon chief Pete Hegseth violated departmental policies by disclosing classified information in a private Signal group, as stated by a person briefed on the findings.

Particulars of the Incident

The online conversation in dispute included particulars about a planned airstrike in Yemen against Houthi fighters. This chat came to light after a journalist for the Atlantic was included as a participant.

Other individuals in the group reportedly included JD Vance, CIA director John Ratcliffe, and former security advisor Mike Waltz. The investigation focused solely on the conduct of Hegseth, as the other officials do not work at the Department of Defense.

Signal is a publicly available communication application that was not approved for transmitting sensitive material.

Serious Risk to Troops

The inspector general's report determined that the intelligence circulated by Hegseth was classified and posed a risk to the safety of US service members if it had been obtained by a hostile nation.

However, the document acknowledged that Hegseth had the ability to downgrade the information he shared, though it was not specified whether he actually did so.

Secretary's Reaction

The source indicated that Hegseth declined an interview by the investigators. Instead, he submitted a short written response.

In his statement, Hegseth asserted he only disclosed information that would not have endangered personnel or jeopardized the operation. He further stated that he possessed the authority to downgrade information and considered the investigation to be politically motivated.

Next Steps

The completed report has been shared with lawmakers. An unclassified version is anticipated to be made public later this week.
