This New Horror Film Is Now Streaming, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Romantic Bond.

We present a challenge for partners in committed relationships who are fans of the horror genre: Get comfortable with your loved one and view Together. This 2025 indie hit has now made its online premiere on the Hulu service. Outwardly, it might appear like typical body horror, but within Together lies a deep contemplation about our choices in loving our partners.

A Debut Feature Investigating Partnership Complexities

Together marks the debut feature-length film for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It showcases the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Tim and Millie, partners that have remained a couple for a decade. United in marriage in actuality in 2017, Franco and Brie bring a unique chemistry to their characters, skillfully embodying both the joys and frustrations of a long-term relationship.

The narrative begins when the couple move from the big city to the rural area for her career. A somewhat stereotypical narrative setup, admittedly, but that’s primarily where the tropes end. Together evolves into as much a deep dive into the psyche of the pair’s relationship as it is a film about physical terror.

A Paranormal Spark

While hiking near their rural residence, a violent storm occurs, and the protagonists discover an underground cave. After a night spent there and finally finding a way out, a mysterious influence starts to affect the duo. This force creates a paranormal intimacy between them that goes well past emotional intimacy.

The entire film is a gradually intensifying fright fest, weaving in elements of hallucinatory nightmares, unsettling (but never too gross) body horror, and genuinely funny dialogue (sometimes in the middle of something horrific). The director weaves these elements together expertly and presents them in a slowly mounting sense of impending doom.

Complex Characterizations

A large part of Together is solely the two lead actors, and they deftly portray countless layers to the characters’ relationship. Her self-assurance and sense of connection is suffering due to a distance. Her unspoken irritation of Tim for his unwillingness to focus on anything other than his struggling artistic pursuits gradually emerges.

Tim, on the other hand experiences isolation and isolated by Millie, who’s the reason they’ve relocated rural and distant from his support system. He is terrified of the concept of utterly sacrificing his sense of self in another person. This fear is further exacerbated by the reality he does not operate a vehicle and needs Millie for mobility.

The director's cleverest decision is that he avoids making Tim or Millie the clear bad guy.

The couple face the sort of issues that come with long-term unions a decade in. Fundamentally, they have affection for one another. They find humor with each other, provide solace, and share intimately at times. But under the surface, there’s an inescapable undercurrent of doubt about their relationship.

Allegory and Meaning

While the paranormal elements in Together symbolize these anxieties of excessive reliance and fully committing to another person, the metaphor does not come across as clumsy or heavy-handed. Instead, these ickier, creepier moments provide a ideal counterpart to the relationship narrative. Both the horror and the drama enhance each other in harmony.

A Divisive Ending

Together’s final act, which won’t be spoiled here, has left audiences divided on the story's concluding statement about enmeshed dynamics. Reports indicate that those not in relationships have seen the movie as a compelling reason for remaining unattached. Meanwhile, certain partners having disagreements found that the film ultimately assisted them make up.

Whether you’re single or coupled up, your own interpretation could act as a telling indicator of how you think about commitment. Will the ending sow feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you recognize your own traits in either protagonist and feel frustration, or simply turn to your significant other and say, “I understand that choice”?

Regardless of the outcome, Together is an test you can embark on right now.

Together is currently playing on the streaming service Hulu as of this moment.
