Trump's Woke Warning Overlooks The Continent's Real Threat: Technological Decline.

The recent US security policy document offers a misguided assessment of the European Union. It claims that open-border policies and what it terms "progressive" policies represent an existential risk to European civilization. Yet, this argument is based on a serious misinterpretation of the reality. The true challenge facing the EU is not societal but technological and economic backwardness.

A Glaring Economic Divide Between Europe and the US

The data paint a stark contrast. From 2008 and 2023, American economic output grew by eighty-seven percent, compared to a paltry 13.5% growth for the European Union. Over this time, European income per person dropped from over three-quarters to just 50% of the American figure. Strikingly, even the poorest US state now has a greater average income than major EU nations like France and Italy.

Today, roughly 50% of the world’s 50 largest tech companies are American, while a mere four are from Europe.

The Technological Shortfall: The Core Question

The growing economic gap stems from stronger productivity growth in the United States, largely due to technological innovation and higher total factor productivity. The landscape of global tech leadership is overwhelmingly US-centric. Over the past five decades, 241 US firms have grown into companies valued at more than ten billion dollars, versus just 14 in the European continent.

This gap raises a pressing question: As the competition for tomorrow's sectors like semiconductors, AI, and quantum computing, where does Europe positioned? Experts widely agree it is essentially a contest between two involving the US and China, with European nations entering at a clear disadvantage.

Root Causes of Europe's Technological Lag

A number of major reasons account for this innovation chasm.

  • Financing Ecosystem: The United States has a far deeper and agile network for financing new ventures. Europe still lacks a true unified investment market, a factor that caps the scale of emerging companies.
  • Bureaucratic Hurdles: Excessive and fragmented regulation hamper European business. A American entrepreneur can introduce a product under one set of laws to access a market of hundreds of millions. The European Union, despite a bigger population, is split among twenty-seven separate systems, creating huge market obstacles.
  • Mindset Differences: Attitudes toward risk-taking vary greatly. In some EU nations, a startup's collapse was once viewed with penalties, whereas in the United States, it is often considered a valuable lesson.
  • Military Investment: The United States enjoys a tightly woven innovation pipeline linking defense and academia. The continent's chronic underinvestment in military capabilities has eroded its capacity for breakthrough innovation.

A Path Forward: Reasons for Hopefulness

Despite these challenges, one can find causes for optimism. Policymakers are growing more conscious of the severe threat and have started to advance substantial change. Notable reports on EU competitiveness and the internal market point to the need for sweeping reforms.

With the right policies and rule changes, these assets could support far greater levels of commercial innovation.

Europe still possesses significant advantages: high-quality workforce, top-tier education systems, and premier labs. Alongside a large internal market and substantial household savings, these elements have the potential to unleash a surge of venture creation.

Crucially, even if the EU does not become the leader in creating cutting-edge technologies, it can still significantly increase productivity by adopting and adapting innovations from other regions.

A Critical Juncture

The European Union now faces a decisive moment. As the saying goes, decline often happens "slowly, then all at once". So far, Europe's technological decline has been gradual. But, if it fails to take bold steps to tackle its deep-seated problems, today's slow erosion could give way to a rapid and permanent decline in world influence.
